Guy Peartree

In 1859, Frederick Douglass, a relentless anti-slavery orator, was being sought by the state of Virginia with a warrant of arrest for his alleged activity in the armed assault on the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. This historical moment beset with national and personal drama is he setting for "Frederick Douglass, 1859".

This performance of Frederick Douglass encompasses the events in Douglass' life from his birth into slavery and his relationships and experiences on the slave plantation to his education, his escape from slavery, and his rise to become the foremost black abolitionist in America.

Guy A. Peartree brings to life one of America's most noted abolitionists, activists, and intellectuals, Frederick Douglass. He renders Douglass with sensitivity to the historical and folkloric features of this period in American History.
