Kim McCoy

As seen on Animal Planet's Whale Wars and Co-Founder of Shark Angels Alliance

Did you know that you are more likely to be killed by a vending machine than by a shark?

Kim McCoy, Director of Campaigns and Legal Advisor to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as well as a co-founder of the Shark Angels alliance is a zealous advocate on behalf of what she believes to be the ocean’s most misunderstood and critically important creatures—sharks.  In fact, one of McCoy’s favorite pastimes is to swim cage less in the open ocean with large predatory sharks—especially tiger sharks.

However, McCoy’s passion isn’t limited to just sharks.  She is involved with all of Sea Shepherd’s controversial and effective direct action law enforcement campaigns across the globe, defending every species from whales to seals to sea cucumbers—even plankton! Featured in Season One of Animal Planet’s hit TV series, Whale Wars, McCoy is a passionate animal and environmental ambassador with an undergraduate degree in business administration and a J.D. specializing in international environmental law.

McCoy graduated from law school with honors, and while there, she served as editor-in-chief of the internationally acclaimed Animal Law Review.  She also interned with the International Environmental Law Project, with a special focus on CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora); the Center for Environmental Justice, a Sri Lankan NGO based in Colombo; and the National Center for Animal Law.  McCoy is a member of MENSA (the “high IQ society”) and founder of the MENSA Animal Law Special Interest Group.

McCoy is a published law review author, public speaker, and scuba diver.  Her experiences traveling and living abroad—coupled with a strong desire to put an end to animal cruelty and suffering—led her to choose a vegan lifestyle six years ago.  McCoy is deeply committed to the defense and conservation of marine animals worldwide and believes firmly in the merits of aggressive, nonviolent direct action as an effective and necessary means to accomplish these goals.
